Neutral Milk Hotel Toronto Show Review

Walking up to the Kool Haus noticing the people lining up around the street, there was one apparent thought going through everyone’s mind “I’m about to see Neutral Milk Hotel”. It didn’t seem real at first, the whole idea of seeing a band that is so rare and waiting over a decade to see was like a dream that you would never want to wake from. It had been over 15 year since the extraordinary sounds of Neutral Milk Hotel came to Toronto. Their hiatus seemed like it would go on forever, yet surprisingly last year they gave a shock of excitement to the world when they announced a huge reunion tour.

As the crowd came in from the cold the feeling of joy flooded the place, the time was almost upon them. Opening up the night were long time friends of Neutral Milk Hotel, Elf Power.  Their dreamy sounds cut threw the air as they played a mixture of songs from their newest album Sunlight On The Moon and some old classics too. The audience was taken back to the 90’s, except the ones that weren’t born then. Then came their classic, “All The World Is Waiting” and with that the night was off to an incredible start. For all the people that did not know of Elf Power, it was certain that this wonderful band made an incredible impression on the minds of the audience.

After Elf Power left the stage it was almost time for what some people have been waiting 15 years for, the legendary return of Neutral Milk Hotel.  Then as the lights dimmed, Jeff Magnum walked on stage with his fellow musicians and they were greeted with such a tremendous welcoming it caught them slightly off guard. First thing that they did was apologized for the last time they were in Toronto, “We are sorry for being late the last time we were here”. The audience forgave them instantly as soon as Magnum started playing the soothing tune of “King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1”. The show quickly turned to wild crowd surfing and a little bit of moshing with Parts 2 & 3, then the energy kept on increasing with “Holland 1945”. Hearing this beautiful and elegant music being played right in front of you is quite the emotional ride, there were a few tears of joy running down peoples cheeks as they sung along to “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” and “Oh Comely”. Everyone was fixated to the music due to the no photo or video policy, which made the experience that much more incredible.

Being totally indulged in Neutral Milk Hotel’s music you tend to lose yourself and time just slips away with every note. During the calm encore, you did not want the show to end, knowing that in that moment it would be the first and realistically the last time you’ll see such a special band. So with that thank you to Neutral Milk Hotel and Elf power for a remarkable night. Be sure to check out the Children Of The Blue Sky charity as well: www.walkingwallofwords.com/charity
